At my offices we have been receiving many calls about the current flu virus.- Dec 19

At my offices we have been receiving many calls about the current flu virus. It appears that some strains of the flu have mutated away from the coverage that the current vaccine offers. Although the coverage from the flu vaccine may not provide 100% protection this year the 50% or 60% it does offer is still much better than no protection at all. Especially with winter just starting this Sunday I recommend patients who have not received their flu vaccination to get one soon.

Happy Holidays and a Healthy New Year

We are now entering winter and this is the time of year when people are indoors with their pets. - Dec 4

We are now entering winter and this is the time of year when people are indoors with their pets. Whether they are dogs, cats, guinea pigs, birds or any other of the less common types of pet they all contain allergens. If you are allergic to these pets the first recommendation is to remove them from the home. Often this option is not possible so the second option is to section off the pet to a par...t of the house or a crate to try to contain the allergens. A dogs urine and saliva and a cats skin is where the allergen comes from so again try to contain where they can go and keep them as clean as possible. Also a dog that likes to lick should be controlled as much as possible to limit the exposure to allergen. The rooms they are limited to should contain a Hepa filter and also the rest of the house should have a separate air filtration system.

As we find ourselves entering the cold weather season. - Nov 16

As we find ourselves entering the cold weather season... indoor allergens start playing a more prominent role as the fall pollens are dying down outdoors. This is the time of the year for patients with allergies to dust mites and mold to take action. If you have dust mite allergies consider removing carpets and encase your mattress and pillows in a dust mite proof encasement. Also remember to wash bedding at least once a week in very hot water. Our next post will discuss how to handle your pets as it relates to indoor allergens.

The northeaster that just ended last night brought a lot of rain to the tri-state area. - Oct 24

The northeaster that just ended last night brought a lot of rain to the tri-state area. During these rainy periods outdoor mold spore counts can skyrocket. Alternaria mold spores peak in the fall season particularly after a heavy rainfall. It is important to run hepa-filters in your home to remove any mold spores. Also you should run dehumidifiers to reduce the mold’s ability to grow in your home. Alternaria mold is a common trigger for asthma so it is important for patients with asthma or respiratory conditions to address this early so as not to exasperate their symptoms.

Now that enterovirus is in the tristate area. - Oct 17

Now that enterovirus is in the tristate area. It seems to be primarily affecting asthmatics or people with immune deficiencies, amongst them children are the most affected. It is very important that all patients with asthma get it as under control as possible prior to the winter. Please make sure to have the right inhalers and to get your flu vaccine. They should do all the things that they were t...aught to do in the doctor’s office to control their asthma as much as possible. Threat all infections promptly. If you are an asthma patient and have not been checked recently they should be seen as soon as possible to establish the status of their asthma and to make sure they are prepared for this potentially challenging winter.

To all patients with asthma, chronic sinus conditions and recurrent respiratory infections - Oct 8

To all patients with asthma, chronic sinus conditions and recurrent respiratory infections to be aware that Enterovirus D68 cases are currently being reported in the tri-state area. We recommend that all patients, as soon as possible, to ge...t their flu shot in the office or wherever they can get it.
Preferably flu shots without preservatives and latex to reduce potential reaction rates. Also, all asthmatics should get their pulmonary function testing evaluated so they go into this winter as healthy as possible. This is not a year to neglect their asthma condition.
